This article analyzes the progress of sensory physiology in Russia from the establishment of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1724 up to the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. In the authors ’ view, this period can be divided into three stages, each reflecting a certain phase in the general progress of physiological science and a specific interplay of various economic, social, and political factors.
