The article is dedicated to the career of a prominent shipbuilder, S. O. Burachek, who owed his distinction among Russia’s scientists and engineers to a number of theoretical tools he developed for the various aspects of ship construction. His major works included a theory concerning the resistance of water to moving bodies (highly estimated by Mendeleev) and a theory of wood and metal strength with applications to shipbuilding. Apart from discussing these works, the article provides an account of Burachek as a teacher and editor of a popular educational magazine.
