В 1920-е гг. в Советском Союзе предпринимались попытки гибридизации человека и человекообразных обезьян. Хотя организаторы опытов преследовали научные цели, но мы не вправе уходить и от вопроса о более общем, во многом символическом содержании этих исследований. Были ли опыты "унижением" и "поруганием" человека перед лицом бездушной, манипулятивной науки? Либо, напротив, его "освобождением", довершая уничтожение социальных перегородок - классовых, сословных, национальных - разрушением стесняющих личность "оков" собственного вида? И означало бы рождение гибрида также и "освобождение" ближайших к нам видов человекообразных обезьян? Вопрос о культурном символизме является одновременно вопросом нравственной оценки, что представляется особенно важным сейчас, когда стремительное развитие биотехнологии поставило создание "гибридов" и "химер" человека и животных в "повестку дня".
