The Baire category method is based on the famous Baire category theorem, which states that any complete metric space is of second category. Mathematicians from the famous Lwow (Lviv, Lvov) mathematical school, led by Stefan Banach, systematically applied this method. This essay discusses their papers on the Baire category method published in Studia Mathematica during the years between the two world wars.
