A founder of modem study of metals, Dmitrii Konstantinovich Chernov (1839-1921) was also widely known among Russian men and women oflearning as a connoisseur of arts and a violinmaker, whose instruments were comparable in quality to those made by the old Italian masters. This paper sheds light on Chernov’s contribution to the Russian violinmaking tradition.
