Abstract
Historians of technology should take into consideration the public image of exact knowledge and its carriers in different cultures and epochs. This article focuses on foreign and Russian engineers who were active in the Moscow principality during the 15 th and 16 th centuries and describes social attitudes towards them as reflected in historical sources of that era. While generally positive, the Russian literati expressed cultural alienation from technical knowledge in general and also often relied on Biblical context to interpret the fi gure of the engineer.
