Abstract
The paper discusses investigations of the geological structure of the Chechnya and Ingushetia mountains (the Black Mountains) and of oil and gas resources located there. The author focuses primarily on Chechnya's south-western part, where oil could often be found right at the surface, and where most of the geological work took place during the 1920s and 1930s. The analysis characterizes the three main periods of geological exploration in the Black Mountains.
