Abstract

This article uses materials from the archive of the St. Petersburg Mining Institute, its kafedra of historical and dynamic geology, the archive of the Borisyak-Bodylev-sky family, and recollections by alumni, in order to reconstruct some of the unknown early stages of the teaching of paleontology in Russia, analyse textbooks, and examine conceptual approaches to the discipline.
