- Abstract
- The many existing attempts at periodization of the history of technology usually follow one of two principles. One views technology as a social phenomenon and its periodization as correlated with the period-ization of the historical development of society as a whole. The other considers the development of technology as sufficiently autonomous such that it follows its own paths and exerts an influence on society more often than being influenced by the latter. If one accepts both of these principles as legitimate and reflecting essential aspects of technology, one also has to acknowledge that the periodiza-tion of the history of technology cannot satisfy both of them simultaneously and can only be relative, depending on the genre and the purpose of investigation.
