Abstract
In different historical periods, the symmetry principle played an important role in scientifi c understanding of the physical world. The paper analyses how the symmetries of the states of motion and rest, as well as other spatial symmetries, provided conceptual mechanisms for the construction of ideal objects of physical investigation. Symmetry violations, on the other hand, belonged to the experimental component of physical research and appeared when abstract idealized objects acquired empirical projections. The authors illustrate these heuristic roles of the symmetry principle with examples from the history of science from Antiquity to the present and demonstrate the effectiveness of historical methods for the philosophical analysis of the foundations of science.
