Abstract
This is the first study in Russian of an important French chemist and politician at the end of the 19 th century, A. J. Naquet. His particular importance in history of science comes from the role he played, together with his teacher Charles Adolphe Wurtz, as an active promoter of atomistic theories in France, against strong opposition from such prominent chemists as Marcellin Berthelot and Henri Sainte-Claire Deville. The conflict between the two theoretical viewpoints and the extensive critical debate surrounding them reflected the general mindset and situation in French science and society of the time.
