Abstract
The previously unpublished correspondence between two important earth scientists of the early 20th century, M. S. Rykachev and L. A. Bauer, throws light on the early development of international geophysics. General of the Navy Mikhail Alexandrovich Rykachev (1840/1841-1919) worked as Director of the Central Physical Observatory at the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. His US counterpart, Louis Agricola Bauer (1865-1932), headed the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. They collaborated in the study of the earth magnetism as members of the international Commission of the International Association of the Academies (1907-1911).
