Abstract
In 1808, the Spanish scientist and engineer Agustin de Betancourt y Molina, a brilliant representative of the epoch of the industrial revolution, moved permanently to Russia, where he would attain notoriety for his technological inventions and architectural designs. Prior to his arrival in Russia, Betancourt intended to work in Cuba. Although war and secret intrigues prevented him from realizing this plan, the engineer contributed significantly to the scientific and technical development of Cuba and became a pioneer in the mechanization of the island’s sugar industry at the end of the 18 th century.
