- Abstract
- This article uses an extensive range of previously untapped archival sources to analyze the contributions of V. A. Varsanofi eva (1889-1876) to the history of science. Varsanofi eva was a prominent geologist, the fi rst woman to hold a Doktor Nauk degree in the geological sciences, and a full member of the USSR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. In addition to incorporating new archival materials, the essay also provides an appendix with the texts of several original documents that are particularly important for understanding Varsanofi evas historical work and her relationships with the scholarly community. These materials include a letter to Varsanofi eva from V. I. Vernadsky, her letter to B. E. Raikov, and V. A. Obruchevs review of her work on the history of geological thought and exploration during Stalins time. The appendix also contains a bibliography of Varsanofi evas historical writings.
