- Abstract
- This article reviews the history of the Russian geographical expeditions of the first quarter of the 18 th century, which culminated in the Great Northern (or the Second Kamchatka) Expedition. The author demonstrates the exploratory ventures' primary goals as geopolitical rather than strictly geographical. Their interpretation thus requires an analysis of these expeditions within the context of Russian political history, and in particular the history of Siberian society.
