- Abstract
- This essay heralds upcoming celebrations of two jubilees in 2011 - he 300th anniversary of M. V. Lomonosovs birth and the 120th anniversary of S. I. Vavilovs birth - and focuses on Vavilovs contributions to the study and popularization of Lomonosovs life and scientifi c activities. Vavilov held a great interest in the history of science. He authored a series of historical works; was a member of the Academic Council of the Institute for the History of Science and Technology at the Soviet Academy of Sciences from 1932 to 1938, where he also chaired the history of physics and mathematics section; became chairman of the Commission on the History of the Academy of Sciences in 1938; and joined the Academic Council of the Institute for the History of the Natural Sciences in 1944. Vavilov devoted particular attention to Lomonosovs scientifi c endeavors and contributions to the development of Russian culture and education, and he wrote many works on these themes. Upon his election to the presidency of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, Vavilov initiated the creation of the M. V. Lomonosov Museum at the Kunstkamera, as well as the publication of a complete edition of Lomonosovs works.
