Abstract
The 120th anniversary of the first astronomical society in Russia: The Nizhniy Novgorod circle of enthusiasts of physics and astronomy. The circle of enthusiasts of physics and astronomy in Nizhniy Novgorod was not only the first astronomical society, but also the first scientific society outside university centers in the Russian Empire. It sought first and foremost to popularize natural scientific knowledge and, under the leadership of P. A. Demidov, followed the example set by Camille Flammarion, a popular French writer on astronomical subjects. Later, after S. V. Shcherbakov replaced Demidov at the helm, the society developed its own style of popularization. Many of the talks delivered at its meetings were published in regional newspapers and national popular science journals. The society also made some scientific contributions. The publication of the «Astronomical Calendar» became its most successful project, which gave the provincial society recognition among the entire astronomical community in Russia.
