The article critically explores the principles and methodological approaches used by foreign experts in their studies of the Soviet Navy during the Cold War. Their investigations viewed a naval vessel primarily as a «weapons carrier.» The most common methods included the comparative juxtaposition of the characteristics of Soviet and US vessels and an original study in comparative design. Overall, foreign analysts held high opinions of the technical capabilities of Soviet naval ships.
