Abstract

This article describes the historical quarries and related transport infrastructure of the Krivoy Rog iron-ore basin dating back to the 1880s-1900s. The remaining structures of that period and their fragments reflect the activities of L. Strippelmann (author of the first geological and geographical estimates), J. Hughes (entrepreneur and organizer of the metallurgical industry in Southern Russia), A. N. Pol' (the organizer of open-pit mining), M. S. Kopylov (the organizer of shaft mining), and M. F. Shimanovsky (director of the first metallurgical plant in Krivoy Rog). There are also remains of a landmark metal bridge across the river Ingulets designed by N. A. Beleliubsky, which are identified and described here for the first time. These objects of industrial archeology contain the memory of the area's mining and economic history and should be preserved as landmarks in the history of science and technology. As a rule, the old mining landscapes no longer pose ecological danger. They should be treated as parts of cultural heritage and integrated into the landscapes of mining towns.
