The article considers the history of the Central Labour Institute, which was not only the first in the country scientific institution dedicated to studies and rationalizing of labour, but was also a cultural phenomen on of this time A. K. Gastev’s idea about creation of «new labour culture», was-laid in the basis of Institute’s programme. The idea in significant part was utopian. Nevertheless this ideology has determined institutes work and significantly influenced the fate of movement for scientific organization of labour. The evolution of the Institute, which lost original ideology in the thirties, is considered as well as Institute end.
