Abstract

This article focuses on the life and work of a group of nineteenth-century Russian scientists and humanists, who for various reasons had to leave their home country and settle in Paris. Providing an account of their views on the specifically «Russian issues» such as the relationship between the state power and the society and the necessity of social transformations in their home country, the paper also sheds light on their role in shaping new research fields and developing new methods and institutional forms of scholarly work. Particular attention is given to the role of this group in facilitating contacts between the Russian and French researchers, in building capacity for the further development of science in Russia and in publicizing its achievements abroad.
