Abstract

Mechnikov’s phagocyte theory of 1883, which marked the beginning of a new era in biological and medical thinking, has as its empirical foundation the data on intercellular digestion (ICD) in lower intertebrates. In this article Metchnickov’s research on this problem is periodized and the affirmation concerning the discovery of ICD by Metchnickov in 1865 wide-spread in the scientific literature is refuted. How the scientist's conceptual development evolved during the period 1865—1883 is also traced.
