- Abstract
The current study examined the topic of application and experiencing the anesthesia as an interdisciplinary medical and psychological issue. The connection of deep personal meanings and experiences of both the subject of anesthesia (child) and their parents was noted. Mothers' ideas about anesthesia, in connection with their teenage children’s surgery for a benign tumor of the musculoskeletal system has been scrutinized. The study involved adolescents aged 12−16 (n=44) who underwent surgery under endotracheal general anesthesia (n=27) or regional anesthesia (n=17) and their mothers. We used the Perceived Stress Scale (for adults and for children), the authors’ “Perception of Anesthesia” questionnaire, and the Color attitude test. Mothers whose children got endotracheal general anesthesia had higher scores on Help and Right Choice descriptors than those whose children got the regional anesthesia. Child’s and mother’s anxiety level were related before and after surgery according to the data from the Color test, but their levels of perceived stress correlated only before surgery. Mothers with high level of stress differ from other groups by the “Uncertainty, unknown” factor, but do not differ by the “Acceptance of the situation” factor. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of mutual communication between the doctor, the patient and his or her social environment for maintaining the patient's psychological well-being during treatment and for the success of such treatment.
