Abstract
The article is devoted to the research of the temporal power of the Pope in the State of the Church and the Vatican City State. The State of the Church is represented as the state entity that existed in Central Italy from the year of 756 through 1870 and was sovereignly ruled by the Popes. After the forced affiliation of the State of the Church to the Kingdom of Italy on September 9th, 1870, the temporal power of the Pope was eliminated. The relationship between the Catholic Church and Italy were normalized and finally stabilized by signing the Lateran Treaty on February 11, 1929, consisting of two documents - the Concordat and the Treatise, which contributed to establishing and getting the international recognition of the Vatican City State, the sovereign of which is the Pope.
