Abstract
Based on the literary, documentary, and patent sources, the paper attempts to provide an unbiased analysis of the actions and activities of Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler, a German engineer, that were associated with Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG). Some myths about Daimler’s activities at DMG that are still widely present in the German media are refuted. It is noted that immediately after the official incorporation of DMG on the 28th of November, 1890, Daimler’s relationships with DMG’s major shareholders went sour as Daimler had secretly started his own business. It is shown that, during the period from 1891 to 1894, Daimler did not participate in DMG’s innovative work and was dismissed from DMG in February 1894. After he was taken back to DMG on a request of a British industrialist Frederick R. Simms, Daimler’s innovative work at DMG only continued till March 1897, after which he ceased to engage in this work and even forbade his friend and close associate, Wilhelm Maybach, to do it. It was also symptomatic that, from the time of the founding of DMG till his death (March 6, 1900), no inventions of Daimler’s had been patented in Germany. Daimler’s actions resulted in an unhealthy atmosphere developing at DMG that negatively affected the entire scope of the company’s activities. The disagreements between the DMG management and Daimler had never been resolved.
