- Abstract
- Attempts to reach record high altitudes led to the development of a special type of aircraft, so-called stratoplanes, in the 1930s. A comparison of their design with lighter planes of the period helps explain the relative failure of stratoplanes to fulfill the expectations placed upon them. The project, nevertheless, proved important in the long run for the development of specialized high-altitude aviation.
