Abstract
During the fi rst half of the 18th century, the «Petrine geodesist», Akim Fedorovich Kleshnin, created a series of important maps of the North-West part of the Russian Empire. This essay examines key episodes in his life, including his education at the Moscow School of Mathematics and Navigation and at the St. Petersburg Naval Academy, his contribution to the demarcation of territories according to the Nystad peace treaty, his work on the General Map of the Russian Empire, and his participation in the Orenburg expedition of 1734.
