Abstract
Vasily Pavlovich Zubov (1900-1963), distinguished Russian historian of scientifi c, philosophical, and aesthetic ideas, became famous for his monographic studies on Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, and Alberti. He was also planning to write a book about Girolamo Cardano and in 1958 submitted a proposal to the editors of the book series, The Lives of Remarkable People. Zubov had previously published an introductory essay and commentary to Cardano's autobiography De vita propria, translated from the Latin into Russian by F. A. Petrovsky (Moscow, 1938). Unfortunately, Zubov did not complete his planned new book, but its unfi nished manuscript and a typescript of the book proposal are preserved in the family archive kept by his daughter, Maria Vasilievna Zubova. Their fi rst publication in this issue has been prepared by M. V. Zubova, V. S. Belianin, O. V. Kaliuzhnaia, and A. M. Shishkov.
