Abstract
In 2005 the S. I. Vavilov Institute for History of Science and Technology, in cooperation with the Department of Geography of Moscow State University, launched a complex historical expedition to study the natural and artificial waterways of the 17 th - 19 th centuries in the Russian North (the Arkhangelsk, Vologda and Novgorod regions). This article reports the results of such investigation of the Northern Dvina and Vyshny Volochek historical waterways, their specific spatial structure and natural, anthropogenic, and cultural aspects of the landscapes.
