- Abstract
- The absorbing story of the Soviet atomic project includes elements of high science, political intrigue, a spy novel, and a heroic epic. This crucial Soviet accomplishment from the early years of the Cold War has attracted much scholarly attention from experts in various countries and fields: professional physicists, historians, political scientists, journalists, ecologists, and cultural studies analysts. The episode is particularly important for Soviet and Russian history, as it has influenced the country's subsequent developments in many areas of domestic and foreign policy, the economy, science and the social sphere. However, because of existing political sensitivities, its history is also of great interest to researchers in the United States. The authors provide a comparative analysis of both similarities and differences in how the two sides have approached the history of the Soviet atomic project, paying attention to quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of research, entrenched interests, methodological priorities, and political values. The analysis also involves related topics of atomic diplomacy, the Cold War, and the arms race. Pointing to mutual accomplishments, different limitations, but also to certain points of agreement, the authors discuss possible further trends in this field.
