- Abstract
- Petrurgy, or smelting of non-metallic ores, commenced development in the USSR in the 1920s. It used both natural minerals (basalt, diabase, syenite) as well as technogenic deposits (shungite, open-hearth and cupola slags, etc.) for the manufacturing of various artificial materials. The Institute of Applied Mineralogy played the central role in the development of the field and of methods for mineral smelting. New products found numerous industrial and consumer applications, such as the use of artificial stone in architecture.
