- Abstract
- Fundamental changes occurred in all branches of the Russian oil industry during the late 19th century. In extraction, simple wells gave way to oil holes with the subsequent transition to mechanical drilling. In processing, new apparata for continuous refi ning and distillation appeared. In addition to kerosene, the Russian oil industry developed production of mineral oil on the initiative of V. I. Ragozin. The growing industry required a serious modernization of oil transport. The fi rst oil pipeline was built by A. V. Bari fi rm for the Nobel brothers' consortium in 1878. Russia developed its tanker fl eet for the Caspian Sea and barges for the river transportation of oil products, designed by V. G. Shukhov. These new components of the oil industry infrastructure helped Russia emerge as a major oil producing power.
