- Abstract
Archival documents and blueprints provide the basis for this reconstruction of the building of the fi rst Russian artifi cial harbor, the Taganrog port, a unique hydro-engineering project of the Petrine era. Unanticipated diffi culties caused delays in 1697-1698, and the actual construction of the harbor commenced in 1699 under the direction of Mattia Millankovig (Matvei Simontov in Russian). Peter I participated in the design work. The episode offers new perspectives on the process of transmission.
