- Abstract
- Academic expeditions at the end of the 18th century pioneered scientific investigation of the region near the Caucasus Mountains. This article analyses the travels and research of S. G. Gmelin, J. A. Güldenstädt, P. S. Pallas, J. N. Potocki, and J. H. Klaproth in the North Caucasus, the difficulties they encountered and the historical sites they studied, in particular the ruins of ancient Majar.
