- Abstract
- This essay presents a scientific biography of I. V. Kurchatov, including his work at the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute prior to World War II, his participation in the Soviet atomic project, and his efforts aimed at the development of Soviet science, including fundamental physics. The authors devote particular attention to Kurchatov's work in nuclear physics in the 1930s, which further developed into research related to the Soviet atomic project under Kurchatov's supervision from 1942 onwards. Within the project's framework, Kurchatov personally participated in the building of the first nuclear reactor, the test of the first Soviet atomic bomb, and the birth of the Soviet atomic industry and nuclear-powered navy. The essay also notes the role of Kurchatov's initiatives in the development of Russian nuclear and accelerator physics, biophysics, and work on the peaceful uses of thermonuclear processes, the creation of new institutes and scientific centers, the organization of the international Geneva conferences in 1955 and 1958, and the promotion of international cooperation in science.
