Abstract

«Ladies of science» in the late 18th - early 19th centuries Russia: Myth or reality? The author describes how women in the Russian Empire became attracted to science during the late 18th - early 19th centuries and what forms of scientific activities they developed to satisfy these interests. The analysis discusses social, family, and economic backgrounds of female scientific amateurs and the reactions of society to their novel pursuits.
