- Abstract
- This essay reconstructs for the fi rst time the early stages in the biography of the renowned amateur astronomer Nina Mikhailovna Subbotina (1877-1961), including her efforts to obtain higher education, the development of the young scientist's intellectual interests, her relationships with representatives of the professional community in astronomy, and her scientifi c work during the 1900s. The author devotes specifi c attention to Subbotina's monograph, The History of Halley's Comet (1910), which received a prize from the Russian Astronomical Society. The essay discusses the problems of access to higher education for women in late imperial Russia, and of the role and self-identity of women scientists in professional scientifi c circles. The article is based mainly on previously unexplored archival sources and Subbotina's private correspondence.
