- Abstract
- In 1918 the Russian Academy of Sciences established the world's first institute for research on platinum group metals. Several distinguished scientists -V. I. Vernadsky, N. S. Kurnakov, F. Yu. Levinson-Lessing, and L. A. Chugaev -took part in the initiative for its creation. This article focuses in particular on Chugaev, who became the first director, and who developed the statute as well as the research program of the institute. He also edited the first special scientific journal devoted to platinum group metals, and inspired and led a scientific school of researchers working on related topics.
