Abstract
The article is devoted to the distinguished botanist, evolutionary theorist, historian and philosopher of biology K.M. Zavadsky (1910-1977), who was born a century ago. He authored classic experimental studies of the struggle for existence and natural selection in plant populations, a theory of species and species formation, investigations of regularities in the evolutionary process, and works on the evolution of evolution. Zavadsky was also known for his active opposition to Lysenkoism in the 1950s and 1960s. Starting from his earliest works, Zavadsky was particularly interested in the history of science, and he used his historical knowledge to develop his ideas about evolution. During the years he worked at the Institute for the History of Science and Technology, he pioneered a new direction of research - historico-critical analysis of the fundamental problems of evolution. Thanks to his rare pedagogical talent, he founded an international research school in the theory and philosophy of evolution.
