- Abstract
- The large system of lakes in Karelia remained relatively understudied by the early 20 th century, despite episodic and uncoordinated efforts by some biologists, who were interested in particular freshwater fauna, as well as geologists and cartographers working on specific assignments by local authorities. The 1915 publication of «Natural and economic conditions of fisheries in the Olonets region» tried to systematize the existing, however imperfect, information about water resources in the area. The Olonets complex scientific expedition of 1918-1924, under the direction of the famous limnologist G. Yu. Vereshchagin, became the first comprehensive and properly scientific investigation of the physico-chemical conditions and biological resources of the lakes. This article describes the idea and organization of the expedition and its main accomplishments. The methodological approach of the expedition was primarily ecological, with each lake investigated in the context of its surrounding territory; the research also had a strong utilitarian aspect.
