Abstract
From the history of Russian embryology: The life and work of D. P. Filatov (1876-1943). D. P. Filatov is considered one of the founders of experimental embryology. In 1940 he organized a separate department of embryology at Moscow State University, the first such department in the Soviet Union. The article describes the main research activities of the scientist and his students (N. A. Manuilova, V. V. Popov, A. P. Sheina, T. A. Detlaf, M. N. Kislov). In collaboration, they developed a comparative-morphological approach that made it possible to connect experimental embryology with evolutionary theory and opened new ways to study embryogenesis. Later, Filatov’s methods were also used in research on the process of development at not only the morphological, but also the submicroscopic and molecular levels.
