Abstract
The article describes the main stages in the development of global navigation satellite systems in Russia (Parus, Tsikada, GLONASS) and abroad (Transit, GPS), as well as their functional augmentations (WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS, etc.). It focuses particularly on recent changes introduced into the design of GLONASS due to US lobbying for a transition to American technological standards. The authors view such possibility as a serious mistake that could inhibit future transition to more progressive positioning methods and deprive GLONASS of the fi nancial resources necessary for its further development.
