Abstract

This article analyzes the reasons why Alexander Herzen, who had entered university with serious intentions of becoming a scientist , became disillusioned with science and left it in favor of a career in revolutionary activity. This article represents a comparative analysis of Herzen's experience of the world, as reflected in his philosophical works, with the cultural/political conundrums confronting students from developing countries who study in the leading research institutions of the United Stales and Europe.
