- Abstract
This article deals with the first wave of pressure exerted by the Soviet authorities upon the country’s mathematicians, which resulted in the shut-down of the Leningrad Mathematical Society. These events are shown to have served as an «overture» to the subsequent persecution of an outstanding mathematician N. N. Luzin in 1936.
