Abstract

The first pub lication of a scries of photographs taken 70 years ago by an anonymous photogra pher, probably a convict working in one of the camps of northern Russia. The images illustrate the kind of technology that was used during the construction of the first major Stalinist canal connecting the Baltic and the White seas. Besides the traditional wheelbarrow, conscript laborers worked with such inventions as a «railroad» made entirely out of wood. The White Sea canal served as a model for subsequent huge construction projects in Stalinist Russia, where laborers were per haps similarly inventive and resourceful.
