Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of longevity and health, as being one of the most essential and profound elements of Chinese spiritual and philosophical tradition, which, as is commonly acknowledged, comprises the three so-called 'pillars' - Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. Each of these three, in its own unique and advanced way, discloses and contemplates on this matter. The current paper is an attempt, brief and essential, to unveil and appraise the contribution of the Tian Tai school of traditional Chinese Buddhism and personally its founder, Grand Master Zhi-i (Zhi Zhu) of the VI century A.D., to the development of a very particular and specific tradition of longevity and health that has not only been nourished by China alone, but also inherited and cherished by such countries as Korea, Vietnam and Japan, thus becoming universal for the entire range of cultures, which once made traditional Chinese writing as their basis, and through it, obtained and most highly venerated the Lotus Sutra, or Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma.
