Abstract
The article discusses the phenomenon of the Pomor cultural revival which began as a movement in the Arkhangelsk region in the late 1980s. This movement, as the author points out, headed toward the idea of constructing a Pomor community on the foundation of old cultural traditions and customs. Old Pomor villages were symbolically important in this context as capable of producing "traditionality"; yet the residents of those villages were excluded from the process under way. It was only later that, due to changes in the state legislation, the Pomor movement would embrace the village residents. The author provides a detailed analysis of the issue and discusses the origins, strategies, and perspectives of the movement.
