Abstract
The article discusses notions of birth in the sacred land of Shambhala, which appeared in Tibet in the 16th century and penetrated the lands of Mongol tribes in the 18th century. To our day these notions continue to live in those lands. The study draws on both Tibetan and Buryat Buddhist texts, and sources of Tibetan, Mongol, and Buryat Buddhist oral tradition. It focuses specifically on the Shambhala land and its inhabitants and on the conditions that enable one to be born in this sacred land.
