- Abstract
- There may be traced two distinctive stages in the development of Latin American ethnographic studies in Russia / Soviet Union. The first stage, which lasted roughly until the mid-1940s, manifested the predominance of scholarly interest toward the native and that native's ancient and contemporary culture. The second stage brought the shift of attention to the ethnic/cultural processes of the past and the present that embraced all groups of the population. The author discusses the factors and constituents that contributed to that particular shift and resulted in a rather odd condition of research where the fate of scholars' individual interests in Latin America would be made dependent on the stake (mainly political one) of the state.
